Central Coast Youth Environmental Stewardship Program
Youth Environmental Stewardship (YES) is a climate & environmental literacy program for middle school students from under-resourced communities.
This five-day outdoor experience connects middle school youth with nature, science, culture, and environmental careers—building STEM confidence, leadership, and stewardship skills along the way.
Project Overview
Project Partners: yak titʸu titʸu yak tiłhini (ytt) Tribe, City of SLO, Cal Poly, Morro Coast Audubon, Morro Bay National Estuary Program, City Farm SLO
- Programs run Monday through Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm.
- Groups are kept at a 15 participant maximum.
- Experience-based learning that includes Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and NOAA’s Essential Principles of Climate Literacy, leadership skills, traditional ecological knowledge, hands-on learning, and outdoor adventures.
- Activities include hiking, kayaking, nature journaling, hands-on learning, and more!
Participants will visit various locations throughout San Luis Obispo County including:
- Downtown San Luis Obispo (Terrace Hill, Bishop’s Peak and Cerro San Luis)
- City Farm SLO and Prefumo Creek Trail
- Los Osos Creek Wetlands Preserve
- Montaña de Oro State Park
- Morro Bay (estuary, Black Hill, kayaking in the bay)
- Avila Beach and Cal Poly Center for Coastal Marine Sciences pier
